Why Would You Need a Specialty Contact Lens?

Soft contacts are often recommended to help correct common refractive errors like nearsightedness and farsightedness. But if you or your loved one struggle with issues like dry eye, keratoconus, or myopia progression, soft lenses may not provide the comfort and clarity you want.

Specialty contact lenses are specifically designed to address several eye issues with the help of unique materials, prescriptions, shapes, and sizes. The type of lens we recommend depends on the issue you or your loved one is experiencing, but we can determine what this may be during a comprehensive contact lens exam and fitting.

The specialty contact lenses we offer can address a number of eye issues, including:

Some of these issues can progress over time and may need additional strategies to address appropriately, but having a specialty contact lens could help you or your loved one achieve clarity and comfort without glasses.

Please take a look at some of our featured lenses, and contact us if you have any questions!

Rigid Gas-Permeables

Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contacts are specialty lenses we may offer you struggle with dry eye or don’t have a lot of experience with contact lenses.

RGP lenses are made of materials that allow oxygen to pass through easily to keep your eyes comfortable while you wear them. They are also known for being easier to care for and use, but it might take a little longer to adjust to them compared to soft contacts.

Our RGP brands include:

Scleral lenses are larger than traditional contact lenses, allowing them to rest on your eye’s sclera rather than the cornea. Their size allows the center of the lens to “vault” over your cornea and avoid irritating issues like keratoconus.

Scleral lenses also provide a space between the cornea and contact lens where fluids can accumulate, providing a reservoir to soothe dry eye symptoms.

Our scleral lens brands include:

2 types of contact lenses could help manage your child’s myopia progression: orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses and multifocals.

Ortho-k lenses gently reshape your child’s cornea while they sleep, correcting their refractive error and slowing down progression. Multifocal lenses use multiple prescriptions to refract light in a certain way, which can slow down progression over time.

Please visit our Myopia Management page for more information on these techniques.
