What Is Equinox LLLT?

circle icon

The Equinox LLLT (low-level light therapy) is a unique light treatment that addresses meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). MGD is one of the country’s most prominent dry eye causes, and it occurs when the glands responsible for secreting oils into your tear film become clogged or blocked. When this happens, your tear film evaporates, leading to dry eye symptoms.

Treating and managing MGD is all about removing these blockages and promoting a healthy flow of oils back into your tear film, which is where our Equinox LLLT device can help.

The Equinox LLLT is a mask-like device you wear for a short period of time while it uses different light signals to gently warm up your meibomian glands and melt blockages.

How It Treats Dry Eye

circle icon

Before we can recommend Equinox LLLT, we first need to perform an eye exam to ensure you’re a candidate for the treatment and that it’ll help address the symptoms you’re experiencing. Although Equinox LLLT can provide soothing relief, we may combine it with other strategies to make the most of your eye comfort.

Once we determine that Equinox LLLT is right for you and your needs, we’ll review what you can expect from your session and book a treatment day. In some cases, we may recommend more than 1 session.

Before Your Treatment

We will ask you to avoid tanning or direct sun exposure for a few weeks before your appointment. When you come in, we’ll ask you to remove your makeup and contact lenses, or to leave them at home before you arrive.

In our treatment room, you’ll have a comfortable place to sit and relax while we place the LLLT mask in position over your face.

The device will use red, yellow, and blue lights for several minutes to melt away meibomian gland blockages and stimulate the flow of oils into your tear film.

You may not notice relief immediately after your session, but you should experience more comfortable eyes over a few weeks.

We’ll book a follow-up appointment in a few weeks to either continue treatment or assess your eye comfort and tear film.
