Why Are Consultations Important?

Even though many people can have laser eye surgery and enjoy the many benefits it provides, we need to ensure the procedure is right for your eyes and their needs.

Laser eye surgery consultations are comprehensive eye exams to determine your candidacy for these procedures and which type of procedure may be best for you. Some factors may prevent you from having these surgeries, but we can detect these issues during your consultation.

These factors can include dry eye, eye disease, eye infections, eye injuries, thin corneas, large pupils, and high lens prescriptions.

Common Types of Laser Eye Surgeries

The type of surgery we recommend depends on the issue you wish to correct, your corneal health, and your eye health. If we find that you’re a candidate for laser eye surgery, we’ll be happy to co-manage the process with your ophthalmologist to help ensure your eyes heal appropriately.

It’s important to know that having laser eye surgery does not guarantee 20/20 vision. Though many people report improved vision after their procedure, many still need to wear contacts or glasses to make the most of their sight.

We’re prepared to consult and co-manage LASIK and PRK eye surgeries.

LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK is popular for correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

During LASIK eye surgery, your ophthalmologist numbs your eyes with specialty eye drops before making a small incision in the outermost layer of your cornea, creating a small flap. Opening this flap will give your ophthalmologist access to the underlying cornea tissue, which they’ll reshape using an excimer laser to correct your refractive error.

At the end of the surgery, the flap is placed back in its original position, where it will heal for a few weeks.

PRK eye surgery is similar to LASIK but with a few variances that might make it a better option for people with thin corneas or dry eye.

After numbing your eyes with specialty eye drops, your ophthalmologist then makes a small incision in the outermost layer of your cornea, removing the layer completely. With access to your underlying cornea tissue, your ophthalmologist can reshape it using an excimer laser to correct your vision errors.

Your cornea’s outer layer will heal over a few weeks.
