Your Eye Comfort Affects Your Quality of Life

circle icon

Your eye comfort is one of those things you might not notice until something affects it. When these symptoms occur, you may find it challenging to focus on anything other than finding relief.

Between 16 and 49 million Americans struggle with dry eye every day, making it one of the most common eye conditions our team can address. You may be able to manage it on your own with over-the-counter eye drops, but getting help from our professionals could provide longer-lasting, comprehensive results.

We can determine the root cause of your symptoms and recommend a treatment after we perform an eye exam.

Why Are Tears Important?

Your tear film is an essential source of comfort for your eyes. They are made from 3 different ingredients that all work together to hydrate, soothe, and protect your eyes, including:

  • Mucus, which fastens the tear film evenly on your eyes.
  • Water, which hydrates your eyes and washes away small particles.
  • Oil, which seals in your tear film and prevents it from evaporating.

If there is an imbalance in these ingredients, you could experience dry eye symptoms. Evaporative dry eye occurs when issues like meibomian gland dysfunction affect the oil content in your tears, while aqueous tear deficiency can occur when there isn’t enough water in your tears to hydrate your eyes.

How We Can Help

circle icon

Before we can recommend a treatment, we need to examine your eyes to determine what’s causing your symptoms and what we can do to help. One of the ways we can do this is by using TearLab technology to test your tear’s osmolarity levels, which measures salt levels in your tears, a common indicator for aqueous tear deficiency.

That being said, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is responsible for almost 85% of all dry eye cases, so we offer several different strategies to help address this issue. MGD affects the glands responsible for producing oil for your tear film, causing your tears to evaporate quicker than normal and leading to dry eye symptoms.

Please feel free to look at our treatment pages to learn more about our various strategies.
